OUGD404 - Colour Theory - Critique
The group critique we had today
was incredibly useful to gauge to the standard my work was up to, and where it
should be. From the feedback I got, the positive aspects were that my written
work was very good and that I had researched the colour theories well, as well
as appropriate contextual research such as colour by subtraction and greenery.
Also I got some good feedback on my idea for using filters and colour by
subtraction because it is interactive and unconventional.
The constructive feedback I
received was that I could have done more handmade visual investigations and
that the general aesthetic of my work was quite basic and too digital in some
areas, which I completely agree with.
While I found all this feedback
very useful in improving my work, I think something that was even more useful
was being able to look at other peoples work and critique it; Looking at some
of the really impressive research publications people had come up with filled
me with ideas on how to enhance my work. I think my work was to restricted and
over-complicated, some of the best examples were sheets of single relevant
images and research on pages, all clipped together on various paper stocks and
all achieving a fluid, continuous and stylish aesthetic.
To further my project I'm going
to start by finding images for research; looking in art, design and photography
books and photocopying a set of pictures relevant to my project. I'm going to
use photography and analogue approaches
like collage to improve the visual investigation of the colour theories and I'm
going to review the visual work I've done already, more specifically the
contrast of hue work; while this is the experiment I used the colour filters
for which got some good feedback, I don't like the visual aesthetic of these
images. Part of the reason for this is the bold clashing colours, however these
are necessary for the colour filters to work, so I will look at a way to refine
these.
