Designer and filmmaker Saul Bass’ film poster designs are characterised by his use of symbolic imagery, strong typography and minimalism. Bass’ film posters were groundbreaking because instead of depicting a scene in the film like most posters would then, he would use minimal imagery and type to convey a specific theme or moment of the movie. This idea applies well to the approach to the 3 book covers, using simple imagery to convey researched information, strong type and single colour backgrounds. This rational, modernist, minimal approach is very concise when it is used for a book cover or film poster etc. because it is effective at communicating the style and themes of the movie and is not convoluted at all, meaning the process of visual communication is facilitated with more ease and speed.
