OUGD406 - Initial Ideas Group Critique

This group critique was really valuable for getting some feedback on the first 3 J-Card designs. Firstly it was commented the level of research undertaken was very good which was shown in the designs, each being informed by specific pieces of research about different Art Rock artists. The orange animal J-Card and green wizard of oz J-Card were praised for this and also how refined the designs were. The feedback for the 3rd J-Card which is blue and depicts objects used for unusual sounds in Art Rock songs indicated that its a good idea, it just needs a lot more visual development. 

 

The best idea from the critique was to accumulate a lot of these ideas into one bigger J-Card; while some J-cards which utilise specific facts look good, some might argue that these particular songs are not representative of the whole micro-genre. To this effect, each track on the tape could have an individual panel and could display a fact and image about it. This is very in keeping with Art Rock’s tendency towards more complex and intellectual ideas. 

Thoughts and Opinions

I really like the idea to create this long J-Card with facts and corresponding imagery on it and will definitely visually develop this idea to see how it looks. My one concern is that with that amount of text it might be quite hard to screen print and align exactly, possibly the design process could inform a more simplified version of this idea depending more on imagery rather then text. Another concern related to production and the finished result is if a J-Card that long will fit into a cassette case once folded.
