D&AD Briefs - Monotype - Research

Monotype’s D&AD brief calls for a ‘typography-led integrated graphic design campaign’. The brief describes how you must ‘showcase what makes that community unique’, ‘explore communities beyond the usual expectations’, celebrate a community which as a positive message by using type, and, really delve into the research, exploring ‘typography in the heritage of your community. Or maybe look at things within it that provide stimulation and symbolism?’.

The first thing to do is really consider and explore the idea and definition of a community:

The most effective and powerful way to go about this brief, would be to pick a community such as a charity which is really trying to do some good and deserves recognition, this could be found within two of the 5 different types of communities; community of action or community of circumstance. A good way to got about this research was to look at some of the top issues in the uk currently which include:

  • LGBT rights e.g. gay marriage
  • Gender workplace diversity and pay gap
  • Woman in Combat
  • Abortion
  • Homelessness
  • Social Care
  • Child Poverty
  • Cybercrime
  • Mental Health
  • Climate Change
  • Obesity

While these issues are incredibly important and pressing, everyone know’s about them, and for this project to have a greater impact, it needs to be informative, maybe the community could be a specific charity or subsidiary of one of these issues, maybe one which uses specific methods to combat/help these issues.

Smaller Charities often offer more of a sense of community then larger more corporate charities do.
