Rana Begum - Occasional Geometries

Rana Begum - Occasional Geometries

Rana Begum is a British/Bangladeshi artist based in London. She was recently  awarded the Abraaj  Group Art Prize this year. Begum takes great inspiration from architecture, constructivism and the Dutch De Stijl art movement. Her work is centred around painting sculpture and architecture and she imbues in her work the interplay between colour, light and form.

Begum curated the Occasional Geometries exhibit at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park and tried to embody  her own inspirations in the exhibition. The result is a large room full of light holding a collection of modern, geometric and colourful pieces of artwork. Individually all the pieces are skilfully crafted and visually stunning, however Begum's  keen eye for light and form becomes clear when the interplay between the different works is realized. Ultimately the exhibit is about interaction and how the attributes of each piece of art complement each other when viewed, every  piece in the exhibit has visual links to the piece next to it, Begum has clearly crafted an amazing exhibit, abundant with striking colour combinations, lines and shapes intersecting and a subtle yet bold relationship between light and space.
