Ligatures

Ligatures

For our first brief we had to create 2 ideas for a ligature. They had to be part of one of the six typefaces in Vignelli's Canon, and they had to have a contemporary function, serving in place of a common acronym or word one might use when texting. We picked the phrase 'as fuck', commonly abbreviated down to 'af'. We chose this phrase because firstly its relevant; people still use it, also it has 2 letters, easing the process of combining them into a new character.  Ultimately I was happy with our final two letterforms; they fit in well with the Futura typeface, This was achieved through scanning, cutting up and reassembling 'a' and 'f' in the Futura font, as well as adding a few angular edges. Also both ligatures are simple enough to be quickly written by hand. If re-doing or continuing this project, I would research more into Futura, and maybe use a wider range of materials and processes to achieve the final outcomes.
