OUGD406 - Track List and Facts

OUGD406 - Track List and Facts

Side 1
  1. Good Morning, Good Morning - The Beatles
John Lennon got the inspiration for this song after watching a cornflakes advert which sang the words - ‘good morning, good morning’.

2. I’ll be Your Mirror - The Velvet Underground
As a producer on this debut album, Andy Warhol suggested an intentional crack on each vinyl record where this song played, causing the words ‘I’ll be Your Mirror’ to be repeated until the arm of the record player was lifted. This idea ultimately did not happen.

3. Caroline, No - The Beach Boys
To tie in with the name of the album - Pet Sounds - Brain Wilson brought his dogs Banana and Louie into the studio and recorded their barks. This can be heard at the end of the song.

4. Michelle - The Beatles
Paul McCartney wrote the chords for this song as a teenager and would pretend to sing French to it in order to impress girls. When it came to writing songs for Rubber Soul, John reminded Paul of the song and he wrote actual words to it, asking a friend for French translations for some lyrics.

5. Brain Damage - Pink Floyd
When Dark Side of the Moon was released, many believed if you played it at the same time as watching the Wizard of Oz, the 2 would correlate. Pink Floyd denied this, however many still believe its true due to some of the links, such as this song - Brain Damage - playing at the same time the scarecrow entered.

6. Vicious - Lou Reed
When writing his seminal album - Transformer - Reed was with Andy Warhol one day, who suggested he write a song called Vicious. Upon Reed questioning ‘Well, Andy, what kind of vicious?’, Warhol replied 'Oh, you know, vicious like I hit you with a flower’ which became the first line of the song.

7. Time of the Season - The Zombies
The Zombies disbanded shortly after the release of their debut album, however after this songs success in America, all the members but the bands singer - Colin Blunstone - reformed. Since no one could replicate Blunstone’s vocals convincingly, one promoter had the idea to announce the singer had died, which the rest of the band went along with.

8. Money - Pink Floyd
In this song which describes the bad things money can bring, The line, ‘Money, so they say, is a root of all evil today’ is a paraphrase from the New Testament - 1 Timothy 6:10: ‘For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil’.

Side 2
9. Psycho Killer - Talking Heads
The lyrics for this song which describe the thoughts of a murder, were inspired by the character Norman Bates, from the movie Psycho.

10. Free Money - Patti Smith
Inspired by her family’s lack of money growing up, Smith’s lyrics in this song describe all the things she would buy if she could. This is related to her mother's dream of winning the lottery and how she would list all the things she would buy if she did win.

11. Revolution 9 - The Beatles
In this song, a sound can be heard at the end of the song which when reversed - a recording technique called backwashing - sounds like the words ‘turn me on dead man’. While many believed this was a conformation of the theory that Paul McCartney was dead, The Beatles  stated the sound was purely coincidental.
12. Space Oddity - David Bowie
This was the song that made Bowie famous because when he was relatively unknown, the BBC used it with their coverage of the moon landing in 1969.
13. Pretty in Pink - The Psychedelic Furs
Director John Hughes wrote a movie of the same name and loosely based around the lyrics of this song. It starred Molly Ringwald and Andrew McCarthey and was released in 1986. Later singer Richard Butler stated in an interview that they got the meaning of the song completely wrong.
14. Mother - John Lennon
Upon dealing with a lot of issues about his mothers death when he was 17, in therapy sessions, Lennon wrote this song about his experience and feelings towards it. He slowed down the church bell heard at the beginning of the song to make it sound spookier after hearing something similar in a horror movie. This was supposedly the represent the end or death of the Beatles.
