OUGD406 - Final Outcome /Production
J-Card
‘Peel Slowly and See’ a cassette mixtape of Art Rock songs comes in a cardboard mailer, featuring a screen printed pattern of images related to the micro-genre. Upon opening this one is met with the cover featuring a modified version of the typeface Compacta Black which visually embodies the minimal modernist approach of some Art rock artists. A curved variant of this is used on the spine representing the imaginative and conceptual hippie counter culture side of Art Rock. Once the case is opened and the screen printed J-Card is un folded the track list can be read, using the typeface Gotham Narrow as a legible body text. Each panel features an image of as animal each one big enough to devour the last, correlating to the animal sounds heard at the end of the song ‘Good Morning, Good Morning’.
Flag
The A1 flag is digitally printed on pigmented cotton. The phrase -“turn me on dead man” - which again utilises a custom modified version of Compacta Black, references a supposed back washed hidden message at the end of revolution 9 by The Beatles whilst the inverted and colorised image of an Indian sitar player represents the cultural and musical influence of Indian music on Beatles albums such as Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band. This ultimately denotes to Art Rock’s wide ranging and intellectual influences and inspirations.
Cereal Box
Produced as reference to John Lennon gaining his inspiration for the song ‘Good Morning, Good Morning’ from a cornflakes advertisement, This screen printed cereal box is a light-hearted subversion of the standard cornflakes box design, with recognisable elements such as the scriptive logotype, rooster and cereal box all substituted for an art rock style alternative. The negative orange on black aesthetic of the box is a visual representation of this subversion and common puzzles and facts found on a kids cereal box are swapped out for an art rock word search and facts, serving as a method of interaction but also a way of informing. The custom Compacta Black typeface is again used on this cereal box, creating a coherent visual identity throughout the 3 produced items. The standard Compacta Black typeface is also used as a less stylised and more readable yet still stylised typeface.
