OUGD406 - SB2 - Catalogue Development
As the catalogue was developed more in full, there was some experimentation with more unusual arrangements on the brick grid system. While these took on some intriguing forms on the page, peer feedback and general reflection indicated they were difficult to read in order, especially when there would be a contents indicating page numbers. A more simpler alternating brick arrangement was adopted for the pages, leaving an area of white space in the middle which could be filled with pictures. The body text - rationales from each person - was justified to take on more visual similarities bricks and its typeface was Franklin Gothic Regular because its very readable at small sizes such as 9pt. The type acting as more of a header, listing name, micro-genre and instagram for each person was changed to Andale Mono in order to match other designed elements such as the poster and invitations however wasn’t used for the body text as it doesn’t work particularly well for smaller sizes because its monospaced and therefore wouldn’t be able to fit as much information in. Andale Mono matches the aesthetic of the exhibition well because it is used in the embossed tape labels which are used to label the cassettes because they’re very D.I.Y and would be seen in a garage.
Thoughts and Opinions
My work on the catalogue is going well, and once all the layouts were sorted, it was just a case of putting in all the information. One concern is that Alex who is also working on the catalogue is doing some designs for it as well and we need to integrate our work together better so as not to waste time doing unnecessary work. It was his idea to reference the Haynes car manual and his designs are taking more of a direct inspiration from that so I think if we could combine our ideas, we could get the right balance between referencing its aesthetic and doing something more original.
