OUGD406 - SB2 - Presentation Development

OUGD406 - SB2 - Presentation Development

When creating the presentation, the most important factors to consider were to communicate the ideas effectively and in a way that seems concise and professional in order to impress and persuade the people watching. To this effect, a few things had to be considered:

- The presentation had to look good, this is very important when trying to demonstrate how good the actual exhibition being presented is, because if the presentation is designed well, people will instinctively pay more attention. Making the presentation succinct and coherent with the visual identity of the exhibition is very important as well, this meant using the typeface which had been developed and utilising the same colour scheme.

  • The presentation has to be scripted to some extent so that the main important points are discussed and you don’t end up lost for words. Once each slide was ordered and designed, a few sentences were written for each slide and even if this is not totally memorised and deviated from slightly in the actual presentation, you come across more well informed and the ideas are clearer.

  • An important factor is coming across professional and skilled, which means not showing slides of sketches or initial ideas and simply showing well photographed final outcomes or digital mock ups. This way the presentation actually comes across like its in a stage of completion and ready to go. Having physical collaterals and mock ups to show is very important as well, just handing around tickets, posters or a catalogue allows people to look through it as a finished product and get a better sense of it then they would through photos. Showing mock -ups of physical parts of the exhibit e.g. how the cassettes would be placed on a peg board, or how the shelves would be decorated with cassette parts stencilled on also shows that they’ve been considered physically and just shows and extra attention to detail.

  • Lastly, the presentation needs to be simple and concise; simply displaying large photos and images on each slide with no large blocks of text. Any bits of information can be read as part of the script but you can’t rely on the audience to read a full paragraph on a slide without getting bored.

Thoughts and Opinions

As one of the people giving the presentation, I am very happy that all the points above have been considered and applied. We have highlighted who is saying what on each slide and being one of the people who worked on the script, I am confident in my ability to remember the main points and talk through it. I think one of the harder bits to communicate in the presentation is how the overall idea for the theme was conceived and how the idea of  a garage aesthetic links to the hybridity theme but once this is gone through, some of the most successful parts of the presentation are when we go through how the actual exhibit would be curated because we’ve considered this very well and the mock ups we’ve made which we’ll show will demonstrate this well.
