OUGD406 - SB2 - Post Presentation Evaluation
The general consensus following the presentation was very positive, with some of the second year students indicating it was ‘the best one that morning’. Overall the positive feedback suggested:
-The presentation gave a good contextual overview which explained the ideas and principles of the exhibition well.
-The colour scheme was simple and effective - white and red with the occasional shade of brown from wood or cardboard. Having watched some of the other presentations that morning, some ideas which incorporated more colours into their visual identity didn’t have as strong of an impact as a brand.
-The application and visual reference of the Haynes Car Manual was a good idea and was applied well for the cover of the catalogue.
-The physical considerations of the exhibit space and how the work would be displayed in keeping with the theme worked well, for example using tension rods to hang up there flags having considered holes would not be able to be made in the walls. The metal garage shelves were also complemented as a good idea.
-The use of a script and prior run throughs of the presentation made it go smoother and the ideas were explained more effectively to the audience.
There was also some really useful constructive criticism, which all revolved around the idea that some elements needed to be simplified. Something one of the second years said which applies to this was to ‘just do a simple idea, but do it well’. This is really important to consider, because especially with group work when each individual person has there one role, the tendency can be to just do as much as possible to hope it improves the ideas even more, however keeping it simple yet effective is often the way to go. The ideas for improvement were as follows:
-The invites were a bit too complicated and ‘fiddly’, they could just be screen printed on a cassette, or maybe seeing as about 200 invites would have to be produced potentially, the cassette invites could be sent to a few more important guests and then simpler invites could be produced to send to everyone else to cut down costs.
-The use of card boxes to actually display the work in the exhibit could come across as quite gimmicky, so maybe only a few boxes could be used and there could be more shelves. It was also suggested that random objects you would find in a garage could be put in the exhibit as well such as a dartboard, a fridge or one of those rolled up garden hoses.
-The floor plan and mock up of the curation of the exhibition could have been more detailed to give the audience a better idea of how it would look. Perhaps more detailed digital mock ups could have been made.
-The catalogue should have explored the Haynes Car Manual visuals more and not utilised the brick grid system as that was a bit of a tenuous link.
-Lastly it was suggested that the tape used for the logotype in the poster be utilised more in the design and advertising and that it should be made in to actual tape and stuck up on walls over the posters and in the exhibit.
Thoughts and Opinions
I think the presentation went really well and everyone seemed enthusiastic about thinking about how our idea could be fully realised for the exhibit which was good. In terms of what I personally worked on other than the presentation, it was just the catalogue which did get very mixed feedback. This feedback indicated that the catalogue had kind of 2 styles and needed to just go with one - The Haynes Car Manual - having worked on the other idea for the catalogue - the brick grid system - this was good constructive criticism to hear and I think the reason for this split in ideas for the catalogue was because both myself and Alex were working on it and when he was unable to come in, we couldn’t combine our ideas to one more coherent style for the catalogue. However some of my ideas for the catalogue were successful for example the double feature pages on the micro-genres which were being done by multiple people. I think considering all this and my other contributions to the project such as a lot of the ideas for the theme, curation and typeface/logotype, I certainly pulled my weight within the group.
