Publication Brief Critique

The ‘Bad Bouncers’ brief was met with a positive reception and a few laughs at the prospect of it. Factors on the brief such as, target audience, production considerations and price range were all said to be accurate. Some of the ideas and feedback were as follows:

  • Thinking about the narrative of the book, it might seem a bit harsh just attacking bouncers with these stories when a lot of them are not like that so it was suggested to add in the other point of view - from the bouncer; this could mean interviewing a bouncer if possible or getting stories from people which are positive about bouncers. In doing so, the hope would be that the books content has more layers to it, coming from both sides of the spectrum.
  • Following on from this idea and considering the design implications of it, there was an idea to use different type to represent different sides of the story; really big blocky sans serif type for the bouncer and maybe if the person in the story is drunk, using warped text to show this, perhaps its legibility isn’t that great. This could potentially add a lot of depth to the story for readers and might enhance the experience of reading the book.
  • Other feedback suggested ideas to physically give the book characteristics of a bouncer to enhance the production quality. The main idea for this was to make the book quite wide, someone even suggested making it as wide as a door or making a set which collectively are as wide as a door. This is an interesting idea but practically, it may not be viable.

The most important things for me to do now are to; keep researching book designs which are applicable to this book and books with similar content to see how the concept is applied to design and production, to gather stories from people so I have my content and to start experimenting with production methods such as embossing and binding folded pages and fold out pages.
