Only Branding Agency - Studio Talk

Only are a Manchester based award winning international branding agency. They came in to discuss some of their work, and discuss design for screen. They highlighted how digital design is constantly evolving, the demand for digital design is increasing drastically, and there are constantly new technologies to explore. Nowadays it is the primary means of consuming a brand, so thats where brands want to be. Only endeavour to create something experiential and interactive.

They discussed their design process, and once receiving a brief, how they approach it in regards to creating design for screen:

Research - analysing the brand/client, what areas are going well, run workshops with the clients, create a series of personas for the different people in the target audience who might use the product. Consider competitors and how to stand out from them.

Wireframing - It’s always the temptation to jump straight into the software, however wire framing is important, really consider UI and what it is, how you move about and navigate the page, what is the visual hierarchy of the design?

Design - apply type, colour and image to the wireframes, apply any brand considerations from research. Mobile experience should be equal to desktop.

Front End - animation prototypes, try and get across to client the finalised design idea with developed designs/mock-ups. Communicate ideas in a clear way.

Case Studies

Printworks - idea for logo came about by thinking of it moving on screen, consider all other elements like this and get a consistent result. Born out of motion.

Lost Village - set it apart from competitors with name and branding. Digital design used to reach audience online with social media. Rune symbols, and typeface create an immersive and original idenity. Instagram stories - textures and designs which the client can throw text onto and quickly post.

Helbers - High Fashion, Same experience on web - elegant. Upmarket, thinking about white space, photography, minimal.

Bring me the Horizon, Sony - promote a new album, coming up with an online promotional tool - setup from a mobile heavy perspective, promoting tour so fans can keep up.

I found this talk incredibly helpful, it was really useful to get insight from a design studio who work so much with design for screen. The way they talked about considering target audience and the best way to get across to them was interesting and the idea of really considering the brand, and creating an immersive, original experience tailored to that brand. A lot of the case studies they showed us, such as the print works and helbers one really inspired me to develop my work visually to a high standard and to create something simple, intuitive and effective.
