Abbey Road and the Beatles - Community

The monotype brief is explicit that the project must visually and typographically explore a community. It’s clear that the main community this project is representing is that of shared interest; Beatles fans and everyone who loves their music, however, seeing as they are so engrained in music and British culture, maybe it represents the UK as a community as well.

Abbey Road, the penultimate Beatles studio album, and the final album ever recorded by the band marked the culmination of the The Beatles career, and despite disputes and disagreements, the band came together, knowing this would be their final album to create a happy, uplifting and incredibly successful album which turns fifty this year on the 26th of September.

The Beatles are the best selling music artists of all time, they changed music and the way music is made for all the generations which have come after. They were the single greatest creative force that popular music has ever seen, and for these reasons alone they deserve recognition. This project celebrates Abbey Road, the Beatles and their community of fans and followers.

Abbey Sans was crafted to represent the idea of duality; the single tracks of the A-Side of the album versus the medley of songs on the B-Side, the lingering psychedelic undertones of previous albums versus the operatic grandeur that came with Abbey Road, even the conflict between members of the Beatles themselves. While these contrasting sides may may seem to represent conflict, they actually represent harmony and unity, this typeface represents what the Beatles did for Abbey Road, which was to come together.
