Abbey Sans Idea 1 - Personal Critique

These images show the full typeface created when experimenting with halving the letterform vertically, displacing the right side of the letter vertically and then joining the misaligned edges back up into smooth curves. For one typeface, as a further development, the right side has been brought back down to the baseline for a more rational proportional typeface. Some of the letterforms work really nicely, carrying curved almost three dimensional strokes on previously horizontal strokes, these are evidenced in the green boxes. Unfortunately, using one rigid system form each letterform meant that form some letterforms, the outcome was not so great. The red circles indicate letters which just didn’t really work and the purple circles indicate letterforms which were fairly unchanged. Using such a distinct set of rules for each letterform has positive and negative effects; while it can create a really experimental and distinct typeface which has a great sense of continuity between each letterform, it can produce a bit if a mixed bag in terms of results.

I think for the current typeface I’m working on, I will have to find a balance between a rigid set of rules, and finding what works best for each letterform, in order to get that sense of continuity but also a good result for each letterform. I think its about grouping the letterforms correctly and making sure that if you, say, make a rounded end for the top of a C, you also do it for the G etc.
