Monotype Research - Mens Suicide in the UK

“Statistics published in the Samaritans Suicide Statistics Report 2017 show there were 6,639 suicides in the UK and Republic of Ireland in 2015. The highest suicide rate during that year was for men aged 40 - 44, with a total of 4,997 males taking their lives in 2015. According to the Samaritans, men are 3 times more likely to take their own lives than women across the UK.”

The ideal community to choose for this monotype project would be a community or group of people small enough that there are specific ideas and concepts that could apply visually however big enough that it’s relatable to a lot of people. The UK men’s suicide rates apply well to this. The community that the project would be communicating would either be people who have been affected by mens suicide - a community of action, or people who have united to try and help/solve this issue - a community of action.

How could this be communicated visually/through type?
In terms of this topics relation to language, the main point is that men with depression/considering suicide don’t want to talk and don’t think there is a way out. How can this lack of communication and language be communicated? Could this idea be inverted, promoting the idea for men to talk?

I think this is an interesting topic and is really worth promoting awareness about. I think some really interesting type could be produced around the topic, either visually communicating these characteristics of  depression and risk of suicide, almost so that people could recognise them. The other idea would be to create type opposing this, promoting the idea for men to talk. My only doubt about this as a project is the fact that the brief says a lot about how the campaign must ‘celebrate’ a community, the idea would be that the campaign would celebrate the prevention of men’s suicide however perhaps the project needs a more celebratory and positive tone. Perhaps it could focus on the good work a specific mens suicide prevention organisation or charity does such as ‘CALM’.
