They Live - Exhibition - Village Books

‘They Live’ is a 1988 sci-fi - satire film by John Carpenter. The film follows a man who finds a pair of sunglasses, which when worn, show the viewer what the real world actually looks like. In the case of this movie, the world has actually been taken over by aliens which have been using advertising and the media to give subliminal messages to the human race to obey, consume and reproduce. This exhibition displayed a variety of images and promotional material related the the movie.

This applies really well to my project because it touches upon this idea of humanity being taken over, however by aliens instead of robots. Whats very interesting about the movie and very applicable to my project is the aliens form of visual communication. Once the glasses are put on in there movie, normal graphic design such as magazines, signs, billboards etc. are actually revealed to be concealing subliminal messages from the aliens. The visual style of these messages are completely minimal - black sans serif type on a white background. It’s interesting to consider graphic design from the aliens point of view, and in the case of my project, perhaps it could be considered from the robots point of view. How would a robot produce a piece of design? What would it look like? Would it be incredibly minimal because it lacks that creative human touch? This is an approach I could consider taking for my project, creating designs as if a robot had designed them.
