Mapping with Symbols - Idea Development

I decided that creating a massive set of symbols for generic everyday buildings and sights might be a bit boring, looking back on the first symbols I made, I mapped just different shops and buildings and it wasn’t very exciting. What I think would be exciting and a bit more personal would be mapping things that I personally notice on a specific walk; whenever we have walks that we regularly undertake, there’s always specific little things that catch our eye, that we see regularly or that we do. This would mean a more intriguing variation within the symbols, and possibly they could be more expressive, seeing as it maps a personal response to routes, I’m not looking at maximising the visual communication of the symbols so that others can read and use the map.

From here, I’m going to plan what routes I will map, map them, and start researching some more contemporary design as inspiration.
