Kerndown

Kerndown

To start considering kerning more, we played a game called - 'Kerndown' - where we had a few plastic letters as the name of a brand, and for each different context we had to change the kerning to make it suitable.

Budget Supermarket
For a budget supermarket we, made the kerning very small this makes the logotype as small as possible which could suggest small prices.

Premium Brand
For a premium brand, fundamentally you're looking at doing the opposite of what you did for the budget supermarket. A generous and even space between the letters adds an air of elegance and suggest premium quality.

Condom Company
As you can see we ended up with a somewhat childish response to this context. While in some situations there can be merit in using letterforms to visually represent something, I don't think this would be the right scenario. In general I think an even and standard kerning would apply well to a condom company logo as it needs to give the impression its safe and reliable.

IT Company
For an IT company we used standard kerning but made the lettering oblique, this suggests movement and makes the logotype appear dynamic which would suggest a fast response time.

Indie Band
The very nature of Indie bands dictates that their style and subsequently their logo could conform to any number of styles. I think the random placing of the letters here though suggests; a subversion of the normality and a fluid and dynamic sound to their music. It's also reminiscent of the cut up newspaper letters in the punk DIY era of design in the 70's, done by designers such as Jamie Reid.

Funeral Service
The main priority when designing the logo for a funeral service would be to maintain a lack of any certain style or character, except for in regards to quality. Funeral homes have no target audience because everyone dies, so the logotype must be plain, simple and not offend anyone. A standard even kerning would be the best option, with maybe a slightly larger kerning to suggest higher quality.

Children's TV Show
For a children's TV show you want something which will excite and appeal to children, an arced kerning and spacing is dynamic and positive and almost reminiscent of a rainbow.
