Potential Research Points/ Ideas

·        Charles Darwin - Origin of Species - Tree of Life

·        Evolution of typography - cave paintings - hieroglyphs/pictograms - the first alphabet - Romans developed alphabet into what it is today - middle ages calligraphy and illuminations - 15th century introduction of printing press and moveable type by Johannes Gutenberg - Industrial Revolution printing on mass - http://www.printmag.com/typography/evolution-typography-history/

·        Combine one of the earliest styles with one of the most modern

·        Could be visually represented as an upwards slope, right to left like Rudy Zallinger's illustration, The March of Progress, which first appeared in the Time-Life book Early Man (1970)- too obvious?

·        Could consider evolution in the future - what will type and communication evolve into? - Type is dead? - voice operated user interfaces? - Range of applications and contexts will increase with direct proportion to technology however type will not become redundant as long as communication doesn't. - https://www.designweek.co.uk/issues/april-2013/what-is-the-future-of-typography/

·        How has the theory of evolution inspired art? - http://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/art/features/evolution-makes-for-inspired-art-1766402.html

·        Fundamentals of evolution - natural selection -

1.Principle of variation. Among individuals within any population, there is variation in morphology, physiology, and behavior.

2.Principle of heredity. Offspring resemble their parents more than they resemble unrelated individuals.

3.Principle of selection. Some forms are more successful at surviving and reproducing than other forms in a given environment.

  • One of the best ways of creating a fluid typeface would be to take a rule or parameter and apply it to each individual letter, so I could adapt these rules of natural selection in a simplified visual way.
