Studio Brief 3 - Week
2
Having chosen to continue
refining my grid based phototropism inspired typeface in my crit last Friday, this
week I have been working on creating the full alphabet, variations of it in different
weights or without the grid and creating the my type specimen.
Something which really helped
me develop my alphabet was giving handouts to other people on the course and
seeing how they created the letterforms, in the case of quite a few letters, it
was quite difficult to form them in a legible way, which assured me that I'd
created enough rules and enough of a system to have obtained a certain level of
continuity within my typeface. Having a couple of examples of how others tried
to create the letterforms, I was able to work from them and refine them to
create clear characters.
My main concern now is creating
my type specimen, I've already planned to produce it by creating a card front
and back cover, with a few pages inside. I think I'll use the colour green as a
primary colour in the palette to match the natural themes of the words
evolutionary and grow. In my type specimen, I will show; the original typeface in
its grid, an un-gridded version of it, an un-gridded version with a lighter
weight and maybe a bold version, as well as numbers and possibly punctuation. I
will show these fonts not only in an alphabet, but forming words and sentences.
