OUGD406 - Rationale

OUGD406 - Rationale

Combining contemporary design methods with postmodernist influences, these set of objects provide a boisterous yet concise representation of the micro genre Art Rock, thoroughly grounded in a wealth of research and information linking back to the micro genre and its multitude of iconic musicians. The orange on black colour palette gives each design a rock and roll attitude and aesthetic, with the colour orange subtly nodding to the tangerine trees and marmalade skies of Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds. A modified version of Compacta Black references the minimal modernist approach of art rock bands such as The Velvet Underground, while the angular modifications of each letterform represent the intricacies and symbolism hidden in each song by bands such as The Beatles. The production method of screen-printing simultaneously references the micro genre’s heritage, grandeur and originality with each imperfection seemingly being a contribution to this idea. Each element of the design, down to every image or word references a part of Art Rock’s intriguing past from John Lennon taking inspiration from cereal to conspiracy theories about the Wizard of Oz.
