Content and Design Development

As a larger collection of stories about, and from, bouncers has been cultivated, its layout and typography within the book as been experimented with. Two typefaces are used in these designs - Titling Gothic Extended and Balboa Plus - Titling Gothic represents the bouncer well because its bold and wide, Balboa plus aims to contrast that, also being bold but being quite narrow and used more for body text.

A white background is used for stories about bouncers and a black background is used for stories told by a bouncer, giving a clear contrast for the different narratives. Key phrases which are particularly important or shocking are displayed on a much bigger scale, with some text being warped to visually portray what its saying i.e. if someone is talking about how they were drunk. The main theme for the design is that it’s bold and loud to visually represent a bouncer, but also how dramatic and shocking some of these stories are.

In developing this content and design further, there are a few things to do/consider. Firstly more stories need to be collected - the publication needs to be fairly thick in order to be this big heavy book which physically portrays a bouncer. Also some experimentation could be done with adding in fluorescent yellow was a spot colour. This will tie in the fluorescent armband on the cover, which will give the book more visual continuity. Perhaps these fluorescent yellow bits could be screen printed? Also fluorescent yellow paper stock could be experimented with for some off the more intricate typographical pages. Lastly some imagery is needed, photos will be taken of someone dressed as a bouncer, in various shots, focusing on recognisable aspects like the armband, or maybe the word ‘security’ on the back of the jacket as this directly links with the content. These letters could be cut out of white vinyl and stuck on. Also it would be interesting to try and use makeup to do a black eye and photograph this as it is mentioned a lot in the book.
