Type in Context - Group Presentations and Critiques

General feedback from the presentation indicated a good engagement with the typography, its variation between pubs, bars and clubs as different sub-contexts and a good understanding of how it varies depending on genre of music and the sort of people who go there.

Ideas for moving forward suggested focusing on:

  • Looking at Stereo’types’; there were various pictures of themed bars, for example an 80’s bar, stereotypes of the 80’s include synth music, mullets or cassette tapes, but what typography would be indicative of this era? This idea could be explored with lots of different directions, music genres, different eras etc.

  • Sheffield has quite a big indie and rock music scene and the Arctic Monkeys are one of the most famous sheffield bands. A lot of their early lyrics depict and comment on nights out in sheffield, so visualising these, or actual quotes from people could be an interesting thing to do. Dominique Vine is a designer who made a publication based on what people said were in their dreams. For each different answer she designed and typset them to visually tell these stories. This would be an interesting approach to explore.

The temptation with looking at bars and clubs is to do some sort of ‘guide to best nights out’ which is a bit cringe and has been done a lot. However if a similar idea were to be undertaken which was slightly more witty and self aware, and employed bespoke design and production methods, it could be a good idea.

One approach for this would be to find bars, pubs and clubs in sheffield with a lot of stereotypes or that are very characteristic and in a publication do a page for each one; each page could utilise different paper stock, textures, functions or even smells to communicate these ideas. The pages wouldn’t have large blocks of text and wouldn’t be so much informative as humorous. They could display funny or bad reviews/comments about these places in individual typefaces which have been chosen, edited or designed to communicate that specific place, the typography gathered in this type in context summer project could even inform some of these typefaces.
