Abbey Sans - More Initial Ideas

These two type designs are generated from the previous designs. The first of which, the striped one, uses thinner stripes which appear at larger intervals. This makes it a bit more subtle and allows for more of the body of the letterform to show. Despite these minor improvements, it still doesn’t feel like a custom typeface, more so an embellishment or decoration, so perhaps it could be applied along side other changes to the actual letterform.

The second type design uses the idea of editing half of the letterform in order to represent the duality of the album, it also tries subtly to incorporate curves and accents reminiscent of a psychedelic typeface. I think the approach and rationale of this typeface is quite good but its just the actual execution which falls short. Some letterforms look quite resolved while some do not lend themselves well to the process. It might just be a case of attempting the same idea with a few different processes, either way, the combination of a bold modern sans serif typeface mixed with subtle psychedelic curves seems like the way to go and would definitely be very reminiscent of the album.

The typeface ideas right now aren’t as resolved and refined as they would ideally be, however these are just initial ideas which I’m not doing to the same level of accuracy that I would for the real thing. I think that what I need to do is really restrict my process a lot more so that each letterform very much has the same distinct design and style as all the others. I might look at some type design from the 60’s/70’s for inspiration. Either designers who worked a lot more psychedelically or post modernist designers such as Herb Lubalin or Milton Glaser who had some very interesting and distinct typefaces. I also might try and print of some letterforms or draw them out and see how I can physically play about with them as opposed to just editing them on the computer.
