The Beatles - Abbey Road - Research

  • Released on 26th September 1969
  • The Beatles 11th studio album and the last recording sessions all 4 of the Beatles collaborated on together.
  • Genres associated with the album - Blues, Pop, Rock
  • The first side of the album contains individual songs while the second side is more of a medley of songs which interconnect.
  • The band has a few disagreements whilst recording the album, tensions especially rose between John and Paul, mostly about Yoko Ono’s constant presence at recording sessions. During recording when Lennon and Ono were involved in a car accident and the doctors told Ono to rest in bed, Lennon had a bed installed in the studio.
  • The majority of the tracks on the record use a ‘Moog Synthesiser’ purchased by George Harrison.
  • Lennon wrote the song ‘Because’ after listing to Ono playing Ludwig van Beethoven's 'Moonlight Sonata' and asking her to play the chords backwards - which formed the basis of the song.
  • The song "She Came in Through the Bathroom Window" was written by McCartney after a fan entered his home through his bathroom window.
  • The iconic album cover of the band walking across the zebra crossing on abbey road was the first beetles album cover not to feature the title of the album or the name of the band, this is because they were the most famous band in the world at the time and people would instantly recognise them.
- Shortly after the album's release the cover became part of the "Paul is dead" rumour that was spreading across college campuses in the United States. According to followers of the rumour, the cover depicted the Beatles walking out of a cemetery in a funeral procession. The procession was led by Lennon, dressed in white, as a religious figure, Starr, dressed in black, as the undertaker, McCartney, out of step with the others, as a barefoot corpse, and Harrison, dressed in denim, as the gravedigger. The left-handed McCartney is holding a cigarette in his right hand – indicating that he is an imposter – and the number plate on the Volkswagen parked on the street is 28IF, meaning McCartney would have been 28 if he had lived.
-The album's working title was 'Everest,' an inside joke about the brand of cigarettes smoked by engineer Geoff Emerick. They had intended to shoot the cover photo at Mount Everest, but none of them wanted to make the long journey. Instead, McCartney suggested naming it after the street on which EMI Studios was located. That meant they could photograph themselves in the nearest crosswalk, which took about 30 minutes total.

  • Harrison’s track ‘Something’ was considered the best track on the album by all the band and George Martin, McCartney also remarked that it was the best song Harrison had ever written.
