Feedback/Critique

We met with one of the creative ad tutors and talked about some of our ideas. We all talked through and decided that the theme of the fortune favours the bold idea was good, just not the copy, so we decided to pursue this more as an idea. The idea of being bold relates well to everyone at uni because everyone is creative and puts themselves out there, for an arts uni, it’s good to advertise the fact that we’re bold, risk takers.

After letting my creative ad collaborators think about that for a day or so, they came back and pitched to me the idea that the posters will just be plain and simple with the idea and literally say “Rule Breaker” “Risk Taker” etc. So from here, I started thinking about how the design could be as bold as the idea; I played about with making bold type really large on the page and playing with scale, however to no avail. I then had the idea to use repetition as a visual device; repeat these phrases in really bold layouts. I used bright gradients again because it is just so eye catching, and tried out repeating the phrases visually. I think the best designs are firstly the pink and red ‘risk taker’ one; the central box works quite well on top of the type, and the type’s leading is high enough the letters are not overlapping, which doesn’t look as good in some of the other compositions. The type is also in a very rigid and structured layout which looks good and works with the typeface well (Titling Gothic Extended Black). The other design which works quite well is the blue and purple one; The type is repeated less and is more spread output it look good, especially the way its interacts with the 3D shapes, same going over and some going under them. The Typeface (Aviano Flare Black) works well in being a bit more approachable and readable then Titling Gothic, however that may just be the reduction in repetition. My only query with the design would be that maybe ‘Leeds Arts Uni’ isn’t big enough within the design.
