AI, Robotics and the Singularity

“Could machines replace humans as the dominant force on the planet? Some might argue that we've already reached that point. After all, computers allow us to communicate with each other, keep track of complex systems like global markets and even control the world's most dangerous weapons. On top of that, robots have made automation a reality for jobs ranging from building automobiles to constructing computer chips".

This idea has been explored in many science fiction stories, however it’s genuinely possible it could happen, and is a concern for a lot of people. What would happen if a computer gained self awareness and learned how to function autonomously?

A good way of summarising the singularity is that it’s the point in which technology has progressed so much, it suddenly becomes this ‘runaway train’ and from that moment, it keeps progressing at an exponential rate. However many argue, this won’t mean that ai gain sentience and rebel, it could also refer to the way we as humans utilise technology, enhancing ourselves and the ways we think and function. Arguably we experienced this a bit already with computers and smartphones which are now so technologically advanced, they are an extension of our own minds.

Here’s what I’d like to start exploring in my research on this topic:

  • What exactly is the singularity?
  • Is the singularity a concern to humans?
  • Are there examples of advanced robots in the world currently?
  • How does the singularity refer and relate to technology overload?
  • What are the pro’s and con’s of technological development?
