Mapping Routes with Symbols 1

I decided to map 3 routes that I regularly walk on, and will therefore have specific things to map. The first route I mapped was the walk down to my girlfriends house. I concentrated on things that I regularly do, notice or think while on the walk:

  1. Light cigarette
  2. Fox (tends to be a fox outside at night)
  3. Is the road slippy? (quite steep down hill)
  4. Turn music up when I get down to the main road
  5. Otley Runners (always walking along headingley lane at that time)
  6. Turn music back down when I get off the main road
  7. Cool modern house
  8. Tight drive way (very stressful parking)

I started to think about how these things could be turned into symbols. Some seem quite obvious, like lighting a cigarette, or seeing a fox, but some such as slippy road or turning music up/down have less obvious ways of visually communicating them and therefore may be slightly more abstract. I started quickly creating some rough ideas, some very minimal and geometric such as a group of intersecting circles representing the otley runners and how they take up all the pavement. Some of the ideas were slightly more pictographic, such as a flame for lighting a cigarette. For the cool modern house, I took a picture of it when walking past and then created shapes based upon its architecture, even based upon the chair and table on the balcony.
